Courts & Filing in Northwest Indiana
A map of the local court system and what to expect if you have to file or appear.
Indiana's trial courts are organized by county, and each Region county runs its own circuit and superior courts. If you have a case, where you file and which court hears it depends on the type of dispute and the county where it arose. This section explains how the courts are set up in Northwest Indiana and what to expect when you walk in.
Our county guides cover Lake County, the most populous county in the Region with courts in Crown Point, Gary, Hammond and East Chicago, and Porter County, centered in Valparaiso. Each guide explains the difference between circuit, superior and small claims courts, where to find the clerk, how electronic filing works, and where self-represented people can get help.
Indiana also runs a statewide Self-Service Legal Center with official forms and step-by-step guides, and most filings now go through the state's e-filing system. Where a form or rule applies, we link to the official source so you are working from the current version.
This is general information about court procedure, not legal advice. Court staff can tell you how to file but cannot tell you what to do in your case. For that, talk to a licensed Indiana attorney or see Find Free Legal Help.
